ABOUT PERIYAR NATIONAL PARK :-

One of the well known and oldest wildlife sanctuaries in the south, Periyar sanctuary attracts a large number of nature lovers every year. Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve was established in the verdant stretches of Kerala in 1895 and declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. Also called the Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary, this place is ideal for watching the animals in their natural habitat. The forest slopes into the manmade lake at the bottom of the hill. This lake serves as the waterhole for the animals and they come here to drink or take a dip. Elephants, Gaur, Sambar and even tigers can be spotted here.


Wildlife Attraction :-
While at the Periyar you just cannot miss enjoying the Fauna. Periyar and elephants are synonymous and one cannot be thought of without the other. Herds of playful wild elephants have made Periyar Lake their favourite haunt for frolicking in the water. Scores of them can be witnessed bathing and swimming here. The Indian female elephants do not posses tusks like their African relatives. They are also not as swarthy as their African counterparts
                                         
     

Other Attractions:-

Kumily: Located just 4-kms from Periyar, this is a rising town where tourism is rapidly catching up just like the spice trade, the major profession of this small settlement. The town is also well prepared with the outstanding hotels and resorts for accommodation. 

Cardamom Hills: Periyar and Kumily are the most suitable points from where guests can easily travel around Kerala's beautiful Cardamom hills

How to Reach:-

By Air
Kochi (Cochin) at a distance of about 200 Kms and Madurai in Tamil Nadu at a distance of 140-kms are the nearest airports from Periyar. 

By Rail 
Kottayam at a distance of about 114 Kms is the nearest railhead from Periyar. 

By Road
Kumily, the nearest town from Periyar wildlife sanctuary/ tiger reserve is well served by both state and private buses from Kottayam, Ernakulam and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
